Population & Demography

The Population and Demography unit is responsible for processing and analyzing the results of population and housing census that provides socio-economic and demographic information of the country.

The Gambia conducts national censuses in 10 year intervals. The first census was conducted in 1963 and the typical inter-censal growth rate over the years is circa 43%. The natural growth rate continues to be positive and the population is predominantly within the 15 to 65 age range.

The unit also undertakes ad hoc surveys like Demographic and Health Survey, Multiple Cluster Survey, Integrated household Survey and other poverty related studies. Such study provides information on HIV prevalence, fertility, etc. required for programs monitoring and evaluation.

Information included under this category includes data on birth and death rates, life expectancy, fertility and migration.
