This table shows neonatal, postneonatal, infant, child, and under-5 mortality rates for successive five-year periods before the survey. For the five years preceding the survey (2009-2013), the infant mortality rate was 34 per 1,000 live births, the child mortality rate was 20 per 1,000 children surviving to age 1, and the under-5 mortality rate was 54 per 1,000 live births. This implies that one in about 29 children in The Gambia die before their first birthday and that one in about 19 die before their fifth birthday. During the same five-year period, the neonatal mortality rate was 22 deaths per 1,000 live births, and the postneonatal mortality rate was 12 deaths per 1,000 live births.
