The average number of people living in a household has generally decreased since the Census 2013. The Census 2013 showed that the average household size was 8.3 while it is 6.9 in the 2015/16 Integrated Household Survey (IHS). This can be explained by the fact that the number of households has increased significantly from 217610 in 2013 to 280459 households.

In many LGAs (most particularly CRR and URR), many households have split into various households. The split of household (which actually was the right thing to do based on the true definition of a household) was partly due to cash transfer initiatives there were being implemented at the time of the survey. The increased in the number of households in could be reflected by the reduction in average household size in Basse, Kuntaur and Janjanbureh LGAs by almost half.
