Banjul, 25 August 2026 – The Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) has announced that the 2026 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS7) has entered its final stage of fieldwork, while data processing and quality-assurance activities are already underway.
The standard 91-day fieldwork period ended on 21 August 2026. To complete outstanding household and individual interviews, callbacks and field checks, GBoS granted short extensions of between three and 12 days to the ten field teams. All remaining fieldwork is expected to be completed by 2 September 2026.
The nationally representative survey covers 7,793 selected households across 390 enumeration areas in all eight Local Government Areas. MICS7 is designed to provide reliable information on the situation of children, women, young people and households, covering key areas such as health, nutrition, education, water, sanitation and hygiene, child protection, and maternal and newborn well-being.
According to GBoS, quality assurance has been maintained throughout the exercise. Supervisors and the central coordination team continue to monitor field progress, review submissions and follow up on incomplete or inconsistent cases. At the same time, the MICS7 technical team is undertaking secondary data editing and validation and customising the tabulation programmes that will be used to produce the national survey tables.
Statistician General Nyakassi M.B. Sanyang said the technical work and fieldwork extensions demonstrate GBoS's commitment to statistical rigour and data integrity.
GBoS emphasised that no statistical findings are being released at this stage. Following the completion of fieldwork, the Bureau will finalise data editing and weighting, validate the indicators, produce the survey tables and prepare the Survey Findings Report for technical review. The timetable for the release of preliminary and final results will be announced through official GBoS communication channels.
The results of MICS7 will support national planning, programme design and the monitoring of The Gambia's development commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals. GBoS thanked participating households and communities, field and technical personnel, UNICEF, relevant national institutions and development partners for their support.
